Why Outsourcing Your Writing is a Good Idea

At least two or three times a week, I have a client call me and say, “I wish I didn’t have to outsource my writing, but I’m just not a very good writer.” Usually, after this comment is made it is followed by a nervous laugh and then some sort of self-deprecating joke.

After this sequence of events, I always disagree with sincerity saying “You don’t ever need to apologize for your writing skills. We all have strengths, and if you are truly a bad writer, then I believe its because you just don’t care to write.”

And that’s ok!

Two other things also come to mind:

1) Thank goodness you don’t like writing, because if everyone could write I wouldn’t have a job.

2) You’re probably wrong. If you have enough awareness of your writing skills to say that its good or bad, then you’re probably better than you think. No one is perfect and no one person is the “best” writer. The truth is, writing is like any other craft. You have to practice and study to be good at it.

With that, give yourself a break. Most all productivity experts will tell you to spend your time doing things you are good at and that usually means doing things you enjoy. What doesn’t fall under this category should be outsourced.

So, if you are kick ass sales person, then do sales! Hire a writer to write the content for your brochures. You shouldn’t worry about that.

Likewise, if you are good with numbers and enjoy creating charts and graphs, then do it. Don’t waste your time fiddling around with web content.

Hire a writer (read: me) so that you can optimize your time and earnings doing what you are good at. An experienced writer who actually enjoys writing will write quickly and do it well — maybe even a little better than you if you had written it yourself.
