Your Denver Freelance Writer

This is the view from my former residence in Capital Hill, just south of Denver's downtown.

Although I’m not in Denver all the time, this freelance writer considers Denver her home. I’ve lived here off and on for close to 15 years and while I didn’t grow up here and have little family that lives in Denver, I can’t imagine using any other city for an address.

Here are a few things you might not have known about the Mile-High city, from yours truly: Sara the Denver Freelance Writer.

1. The weather here is great. We have at least 300 days of sunshine every year. Yes, we get a lot of snow (55 inches), but you’ll be surprised to know that we escape most of what the mountains get. And when it does snow, it usually melts within a couple of days.

2. The Rocky Mountain News, which closed its doors in February 2009, opened its doors way back in 1859. The News kept its magazine-style paper format for its entire publication run–something very few newspapers do.

3. One of the steps of the Colorado State Capital Building is exactly 5,280 feet above sea level (which happens to be exactly one mile). The step is marked with a plaque too.

4. We have a United States Mint in town, though I’ve never been.

5. The Denver Art Museum (DAM) structure is a piece of art in itself. DAM was designed by the famous Daniel Libeskind.

7. My favorite restaurant and one of Denver’s oldest restaurants is the Wazee Supper Club. (This isn’t really a Denver fact, I just wanted to share:)

8. Colfax Avenue is the longest continuous road in all of the United States. It may be known for the scantily clad women that hang out there, but this street is well-known for a lot of other things too, including great restaurants, bars, shops, galleries, and Jack Kerouac.

9. Apparently, the cheeseburger was invented here…but I’m sure this one can be disputed.

10. The National Western Stock Show comes to Denver every January, and it is the world’s largest rodeo.
