Michelle Rafter, leader of the Blogathon, asked all participating bloggers to write a haiku today. From what I’ve read on the other blogs, most of us are up for the challenge even though we haven’t written a haiku since grade school.
I have the Power Words Contest on the brain, so my haiku naturally covers that topic. If you haven’t entered the contest, I hope you do. I also hope you take the time to write your own haiku…it’ll make you feel young again, I promise.
Power words make heat
Stick it to ‘em, don’t forget
Words do empower

As part of the WordCount Blogathon, today I am trading blog posts with Harry Marks over at CuriousRat.com. I feel very fortunate to have met Harry and am delighted to introduce his post on the keys to minimal blog design.
**********
When blogging first started, the running theme on 99% of blogs was to throw on as many animated GIFs and advertisements as possible because it made your blog “more interesting”. It didn’t. It was like peering into the Ark of the Covenant.
Trends have shifted – and for the better. Bloggers (for the most part) are opting for minimalism over “kitchen sink-ism” and the results are astounding. Never before have blogs been as engaging or as readable as they are now. Here are three popular blogs that have mastered minimal design and focused on content, rather than ads or widgets: (more…)

Last week, Tracy Doerr, a fellow Blogathoner, interviewed me about my experience blogging. It was great fun to sit down and think about what I’ve learned thus far. A big thank you to Tracy for the opportunity.
After completing the questionnaire, I thought I’d ask her a few questions of my own, since I think her Q&A idea is such a great one. Here’s what I learned about Tracy… (more…)

Today, as part of the WordCount Blogathon, I’m participating in the first group writing assignment of the month. The topic? The 10 Blogs I Can’t Live Without.
Blog #1 – Sporks
Thanks to the help from my husband, Jason, I started No. 2 Pen about two years ago. Without him and all he’s taught me as an entrepreneur and web marketing consultant, I’m not sure I’d be where I am. Thanks, Spork Marketing!
Blogs #2 and 3 – A bit of funny
There are several blogs I read that have nothing to do with business and nothing to do with writing. In fact, these blogs just make me laugh: Hipster Puppies and The Bloggess. You can’t work all the time. (more…)

The American Association of Advertising Agencies estimates we see 650 ads in a day.
Today, you get to see 653 advertisements thanks to the Best of 2009 Blog Challenge hosted by Gwen Bell, a fellow blogger, writer, Tweeter, and web entrepreneur. Gwen has asked all bloggers participating in her challenge to write about the advertisement that made them think this year.

I’m participating in a group writing project hosted by Daily Blog Tips, a blog dedicated to, well, providing daily blog tips. The theme of the project is “2009 in review.” You can find the complete list of participating bloggers on the DailyBlogTips site starting next Monday (Dec. 14).
Projects like these are a great way to meet other bloggers, generate ideas for blog posts, and of course, getting links. If you blog and haven’t done something like this, I suggest you try it. But I digress.

Now that a few days of the May Blogathon have passed, I thought I would post the full list of other writers slash bloggers who are participating in the 2nd Annual WordCount Blogathon, which I am also participating in.

Yesterday I signed up for the 2nd annual WordCount Writers’ Blogathon put together by Michelle V. Rafter, a freelance writer who writes for online magazines such as IncTechnology.com, Portfolio.com, and MoneyWatch.com. Every freelance writer who joins the Blogathon makes a commitment to post to their blog each and every single day in May. Seeing how today is May 2 and yesterday I did not post here, I’ve already failed.
But never fear! With every failure a valuable lesson follows. So even though I missed the first day of the Blogathon, I thought I would take this opportunity to share a few relevant tips on blog writing.
