Writing Tip #1

We all need to use words that mean something. I’m not just talking cliches either. Words such as “industry standard” and “cutting edge” need to be used sparingly. David Meerman Scott will tell you why in his book, The New Rules of Marketing and PR: How to Use News Releases, Blogs, Podcasting, Viral Marketing and Online Media to Reach Buyers Directly.
One of the most popular pieces from this book is the Gobbledygook Manifesto. If you haven’t read the Manifesto, then you must read it. And if you have read it, read it again because the message is one we all need to be reminded of from time to time. As a writer I know I’m guilty of using meaningless words from time to time, but I try my very best to be clear in my messages to drive the reader to action.
Thanks Mr. Scott for teaching us all to be better writers.

Any full time writer will tell you that some days they just don’t feel like writing. It’s not that we don’t like to write — we love to write! It’s just a realty all of us face in our jobs. Sometimes you want to use a different part of your brain to do something opposite of what you are trained to do and have done for the last 80 working hours.
That’s human nature. And it’s very healthy, I think.

These three words are great examples of tricky spellings that I just can’t seem to get right on the first try. I know I’m not alone, we all have a mental block on certain words, right?
